Protect the climate with core competencies

As a company, do we have social responsibility? Are we supposed to do more than what it simply expected?

We asked ourselves the same questions a while ago: one of our colleagues came to us with a very innovative passion project, which he was pursuing in his downtime. He asked if he could dedicate some of his work hours to the cause which was not only important to him, but to all of us– rainforest protection. It’s been two years since Christian Krause got involved with Rainforest Connection on a voluntary basis and since January 2017 we actively support him in this endeavor.

Rainforest Connection is an organisation which turns recycled smartphones, high-sensitivity microphones and solar panels into forest guardians. These autonomous, solar-powered listening devices are installed on trees in rainforests all over the world and transmit recorded data to a cloud-based AI called Gaia. Gaia, in turn, is able to differenciate between various sounds: from birds singing to chainsaw activity and it can pinpoint the latter at great distance. When the system identifies illegal activities such as clearcutting or poaching, it sends real-time warning signals to the rangers.

The system protects the flora and fauna of the rainforests, as well as its indigenous tribes, which often fall prey to ruthless poachers. It is being constantly developed and equipped with new applications, such as (among others): a tool locating rangers in areas at risk, an endangered species tracker or a user app which allows you to listen to the sounds of the rainforest.

What do QualityMinds have to do with it, specifically? We do what we do best: test. Christian is responsible for software testing on all levels and phases of the development process. We plan a long-term partnership with Rainforest Connection in 2018. As a matter of fact, our fellow QualityHub company Quality Technology Solutions will provide a web developer who will redesign the Rainforest Connection homepage.

Harvard scholar Michael Porter once said that the purpose of the corporation must be redefined as creating shared value, not just profit per se. As you can see, we took this idea seriously and we are starting to work on our social responsibility or „shared value“. We will keep you posted on our progress!
